There is little doubt in anyone’s mind that the Internet has done huge things in terms of how we interact with the world. The story of the Internet is one marked by a relatively rapid increase in usage and diversity. What was once merely a tool for exchanging information between a few science labs is now a household necessity. We all know just how quick these changes have come about; we have seen it all unfold before our very eyes. However, it can be difficult, from this viewpoint, to really understand the way it has unfolded. What are the main ways in which the Internet has affected our lives? Communication has always been an important tool for humans – and probably always will be. This is, surely, the main thing which the Internet has revolutionised. With the Internet, communicating across the world is now no issue at all. What’s more, it has become cheaper as time has gone on. It is now perfectly reasonable to expect to be able to call someone across the Atlantic for free.


Most of us see the sharing of news as an important social function. The Internet has ensured that news is unlikely to stay hidden for very long. One main area which has changed things dramatically is social media. With social media, it has become very difficult for anyone to keep anything a secret for a very long time. With increased communicative abilities comes more and more reliance on the systems which enable it. As such, it is likely that we can expect to see news being imparted faster and faster as time goes on.
